Born in Junction City, Kansas, the artist received a B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1980, Pittsburgh. She has lived and worked in Washington, D.C since 1985. The artist is known for her multi-media approach, with paintings, sculpture, photography, installation and printmaking, and her use of imaginary characters, such as her alter ego, Fatima Mayfield. They all reflect her interest in African-American identity and the motivations in forming identity. She has received awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and shown her work in solo and group shows throughout the United States, and in England, Russia and the Netherlands.
