(REVOLUTION.) Ramsay, David. The History of the Revolution of South-Carolina. 5 folding maps and plans. 2 volumes. 8vo, contemporary tree calf, spine gilt extra, joints starting, minor wear; the large map retabbed and reinserted; early owner's signature on the half-titles (William Smith). Trenton: Isaac Collins, 1785
- Notes: first edition of an important history of the revolution and the first book to receive copyright in america. Although Ramsay applied for copyrights to this work in 1785 and his History of the American Revolution in 1789, they were not granted until 1790. Nevertheless, they hold the joint distinction of being the first books to receive copyright in America. It is also a reliable history of the Revolution in the south, as Ramsay served as a military surgeon during the war. This copy with the first state of A Sketch of the Operations Before Charleston (see Wheat & Brun 594). Howes R36; Sabin 67691; Evans 19211; Felcone 223.
