Bill of lading for the sloop Sally owned by Nicholas Brown & Company.

Providence, RI, 4 October 1766
Partly-printed Document signed by ship captain Jonathan Ward. One page, 6½ x 7¼ inches, with docketing on verso; folds, minimal wear.

This document certifies the cargo of a small coastal vessel leaving Providence, RI for the port of Egg Harbor, NJ. It carried 6 blue caps, about 80 yards of textiles, a barrel of sugar, 6 tea kettles, an iron pot, and a kettle.

Nicholas Brown & Company was the partnership of the four Brown brothers who played a central role in 18th-century Providence. The company is infamous for the voyage of a different vessel named Sally: a disastrous slaving expedition by a brigantine of that name in 1764-1765. A sloop is a small vessel intended for the coastal trade, while a brigantine is a larger vessel suited for a trans-Atlantic voyage.
