Folio, Volume 1 364x237 mm, contemporary vellum boards, soiled, spine darkened, contents generally clean; Volume 2 357x242 mm, contemporary calf gilt, spine ends chipped at top and bottom, marginal dampstaining throughout, blank lower corner restored on around 20 leaves at beginning, vertical crease in preliminaries. Signatures of Jonas Deutschlender, M.D., dated Venice, 1654, and the mathematician Nicolaus Theodor Reimer (1772-1832), dated 1809, in Volume 1; old signature and stamp (both "De Launoy") in Volume 2.   • Notes: first edition. all published of an encyclopedic compendium of astronomical knowledge, observations, and experimental data by a staunchly anti-Copernican Jesuit (1598-1671), including a comparative analysis of various world systems (favoring his own alternative geo-heliocentric theory), investigations of the motion of falling bodies and pendulums, and the most accurate lunar maps yet published, introducing the nomenclature system for lunar features still in use today.
