Notes: Fabulous archive of correspondence to and from Lloyd Goodrich, Associate Director, and then Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1958-68. Goodrich was also an art critic and author of several definitive biographies on such artists as Hopper, Kuniyoshi, Eakins, Marsh, Homer, Bishop, among others. This archive contains roughly 200 pieces of correspondence to him and his family from numerous artists and cultural figures over several decades.
Among the most notable pieces in the collection are: 6 letters from reginald marsh with sketches, including a letter from him at the age of 19 writing from Yale and discussing how he is aching to be in New York City at the Art Student's League, but knows he should get his education while he can. He writes: "I have gone to many stores in New Haven with my portfolio under my arm to show them what I can do --but nothing doing!" With some sketches in the margins. New Haven, 1917; another with amusing description and ink sketches of his apartment in Paris, 1925 (second page missing); another very rich 4-page letter discussing his life and work in New York in 1928, mentioning artist friends including Bob Coates, Yasuo [Kuniyoshi]: "we go to prize fights and salons" and "discovered wonderful cafées joints in Harlem excellent for etching" * group of cards and letters, most containing original signed artwork in various mediums by john von wicht * 2 cards with original colored drawings by Atillo Salemme * 5 letters from Isabel Bishop * greeting with signed limited copper etching by Ronald Mallory * small mixed-media print by Jimmy Ernst (87x75mm) * cards with original artwork by Harry Gottlieb * group of letters and cards by Edward and (mostly) Jo Hopper to Goodrich and his relatives Albert and Frances Hackett, famous authors and screenwriters of Diary of Anne Frank, The Thin Man, and other major productions.
