RICHARD CARLINE (Oxford 1896-1980 London) Portrait of a Young Man (Self-Portrait).

RICHARD CARLINE
(Oxford 1896-1980 London)
Portrait of a Young Man (Self-Portrait).

Pencil on paper, 1916. 280x247 mm; 11 1/8x9 3/4 inches. Signed and dated "Jan. 1916" in pencil, upper right recto.

Ex-collection Thomas Agnew & Sons, Ltd., London, with the label, inventory number 46978.

Carline was a British artist, arts administrator and writer. He served in World War I on the Western Front and in the Middle East. Although known for his depictions of aerial combat painted during the war, from the mid-1930s his artistic output was overshadowed by his numerous roles in local, national and international artists' organizations. Carline's home in Hampstead became the center of an artistic circle that included Henry Lamb, Stanley Spencer (Carline's brother-in-law), Mark Gertler and John Nash. This early portrait likely shows Carline at the outset of World War I, around the time he joined the British army in 1916.
