In 1923, Norman Wilkinson began campaigning for artists of the Royal Academy to try their hands at poster design. The concept was that classically trained artists might bring something to the medium that wasn't already present. The first posters from this initiative began to appear in 1924. "Three posters depicted industries served by the LMS [Coal, Cotton and Steel] . . . this was new ground for the railway poster. Companies had in the past advertised docks and other facilities that they offered to industry but had not shown the industries themselves. Wilkinson saw no reason why posters should only show the delights of the Lake District or Scottish Highlands. 'Beauty of another kind is to be seen in the great industries of the north' . . . like many others he believed passengers were interested in the work of the railway in all its forms" (Railway p. 14). Depicted here are steelworks located near Motherwell in Scotland.
