"The Media makes things so hard on the families"

Richard M. Nixon

Two Autograph Letters Signed, "Dick Nixon" or "RN," to Representative Robert Carlton Wilson or his wife ("Dear Bob" or "Dear Shirley").

The first, recognizing that the media and other pressures can make retirement the best option, praising him and expressing gratitude for his friendship and support. The second, observing that the large dinner parties of politicians can be a great burden for the spouse and remarking that "you were a superb hostess for a very large gathering." Each 1 page, 4to, personal stationery; horizontal folds.

San Clemente, CA, 19 January; New York, 25 September 1980.

  • Notes: 19 January 1980: ". . . I see how you & your wife will welcome getting out of the 'pressure cooker'. However, the country will miss your outstanding leadership & statesmanship.
"The Media makes things so hard on the families that I can see why many good men would be reluctant to run. I hope you can get a successor who can at least shine your shoes--if not fill them. . . ."

Bob Wilson (1916-1999) was a Republican congressman for twenty-eight years, serving on the House Armed Services Committee and the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, supporting Richard Nixon in his 1968 presidential campaign.
