RICHARD STONE.
"One of New York's most-sought men, the mad bomb maker still moves about freely planting his dread packages." Original illustration for "Wanted: The Man Without A Face," by Joseph Carter, an exposé on New York's Mad Bomber, published in Collier's, February 3, 1956, with their labels on verso. India ink, dyes, and correction fluid on board. 495x495 mm; 19 1/2x19 1/2 inches, on 22x24 1/2-inch board. Signed "Dick Stone" in left image. Accompanied by a tear sheet of the article.

  • Notes: Stone (1925 - ) "studied both at the New York Art Students League and at Yale University, where he earned a B.F.A. His paintings are assured and subtle, carefully simplified, always in good taste. He successfully combines the traditional accomplishments of good drawing and academic painting that holds its own with contemporary techniques" -- Walter Reed "The Illustrator in America" (New York: The Society of Illustrator, 2001).
