Richard Yarde's Savoy is a series of murals, works on paper, and installation, inspired by Harlem's Savoy Ballroom. The jazz club opened its doors in 1926 and flourished through the years of the Great Depression before finally closing in 1959. The Savoy Ballroom did not have a discrimination policy and became a hot spot for stylish and talented Black dancers. Yarde grew up in Boston and was initially inspired by photographs of the Savoy's patterned floors and canopy. His Savoy installation brought together components of Yarde's earlier works – architectural subjects in primary colors and his muted figural works. The installation took Yarde approximately two years to complete and was presented in a traveling exhibition in 1982-83, organized by Mount Holyoke College Art Museum.
