Painted plaster, circa 1928-30. Approximately 444 mm; 17 1/2 inches high. Incised artist's signature on the base, rear edge.

Provenance: acquired at Kaminski auctions, Beverly, MA; private collection, New York (2013).

This large plaster head is an early portrait by Richmond Barthé. In 1928, he made similar life-size heads in a series of portraits, including Henry Ossawa Tanner, Touissant L'Ouverture, Booker T. Washington and Paul Lawrence Dunbar, all in painted plaster.
