  • Provenance:
Estate of Dr. J. Eugene Grigsby, Jr.
  • Notes:
Born in Idabel, Oklahoma, Rip Woods was raised in Phoenix, Arizona. His early experiences with his family shaped his values and sense of identity. In 1952, Rip married Wanda Woods, who he met in secondary school.

Woods was a mentee of Dr. Eugene Grigsby, who taught at Carver High School, where Woods' passion for art truly began to take root. Under Dr. Grigsby's mentorship, Woods' talents blossomed, and the bond between the two lasted throughout his career. They would later reunite at Arizona State University, where both would teach at the School of Art. Dr. Grigsby remained a lifelong influence on Woods, not just professionally, but personally as well. Together, they co-founded the Artists of the Black Community (ABC/AZ), a group dedicated to promoting Black artists in Arizona.
