Pencil and graphite on cream wove paper, circa 1950-55. 370x260 mm; 14 1/2x10 1/4 inches. Adhesive tape and residue at sheet edges.
Provenance: Gift from the artist; private New York collection.
By late 1947, Bob Blackburn had acquired his own lithographic press, and a year later, he opened the Printmaking Workshop in Chelsea, printing for artists and encouraging his friends to experiment in lithography. The artist''s interest in abstraction was shared with his fellow printmakers, Will Barnet, Ronald Joseph and John Von Wicht in this period. Between 1951 and 1952, he worked with Barnet on a ground breaking suite of color lithographs that were featured in Artnews. Creative Workshop: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn''s Print Workshop, the Library of Congress online exhibition.
