ROBERT CAPA (1913-1954) The Altalena under fire from Israeli troops, Tel Aviv.

ROBERT CAPA (1913-1954)
The Altalena under fire from Israeli troops, Tel Aviv. Silver print, the image measuring 9¼x14 inches (23.5x35.6 cm.), with Capa's credit stamp (twice) on verso. June 22, 1948; printed 1950s

  • Condition: Capa's historic photograph of the Altalena under fire is overall in very good condition. Robert Capa came to the country in 1948 to witness and document the ceremony of the declaration of the State and the War of Independence.

Under close examination and strong raking light, the surface of the print evidences a few surface imperfections, which are primarily confined to the edges of the print. These include scattered fine craquelure lines and tiny horizontal creases, with no emulsion loss, along the left and right edges. Otherwise, the print is clean and neat.

The print has no margins and its edges evidence scattered chips and losses at the corners and around the edges.

The verso is slightly soiled with tiny spots of residue. The title is written in ink in an unknown hand.
