  • Provenance:
    Private collection, Connecticut.

In the late 1960s, the intersection of East 63rd Street and First Avenue on the Upper East Side was transitioning from a residential, quiet neighborhood, into an enclave of bars and informal gathering spots. One of the most emblematic social spots was the first TGI Fridays, which opened at the intersection in 1965. The area quickly became a magnet for young men and women navigating the city's evolving dating culture.

Although this particular illustration has not been definitively identified, its artist, Robert Deschamps, was active during this period and contributed regularly to the New York Times, capturing scenes reflective of the city's evolving social landscape.
