ROBERT HUGHES (1938-2012)

Typed Letter Signed, "Bob," to NY art dealer Max Hutchinson ("Dear Max").
Announcing his plan to move to New York City to become a critic for TIME, asking whether he might buy his Robert Klippel sculptures to finance the trip, reporting that his book remained unfinished [Hughes's biography on Leonardo da Vinci was never completed], mentioning that his marriage had broken up, and congratulating him on his success [Max Hutchinson Gallery operated in SoHo from 1968 to 1985]. 1 page, tall 4to, aerogram, pale blue paper; closed tear across page near lower edge affecting signature (without loss), doodles and notes in unknown hand on verso, horizontal folds.

[London], 16 February 1970.

"It looks as if I, too, will be moving to New York shortly: Time magazine want[s] a new art critic and, as you know, I have always craved anonymity. This will give me a chance to undo all the good work Newsweek did for you last week. Watch it, cobber. The Strine Mafia are moving in. Maybe we could form a protection business and take over all the Jewish delicatessens on the Lower East Side, operating out of Jasper's bank.

"Anyway, what I want to know is whether or not you would be interested in buying . . . my two sculptures by Bob Klippel. . . . They are both reproduced in that article I wrote on him in Art & Australia in 1963. . . . I need the bread for the move to New York. . . .
". . . Things are find here: my book on Leonardo is not yet finished (though going strong), my marriage has broken up, but the [artwork by Frank] Stella is still on my wall and the jam-covered fingers of little Danton [his three-year-old son] have not as yet defaced it.
"Congratulations on the fine entry into Manhattan; that's what we all love in you, Max, you're as invisible as a battalion of euphonium-players marching along in gold epaulettes with their cocks erect. . . ."
