ROCKWELL KENT Sleeping Man. Brush and ink on heavy cream wove paper, 1919. 175x225mm; 6.875 x8.875 in.. Signed, dated and inscribed "Alaska" in ink, lower right. Kent and his son spent most of 1918-19 on Fox Island, Alaska, 12 miles offshore from Seward in Resurrection Bay. He had financed the trip by selling shares of stock in himself (as Rockwell Kent Incorporated), planning to repay the stocks on his return with the funds generated from the sale of art which he would make on the trip. The following year a show at Knoedler, New York, ofthe paintings and drawings he had made in Alaska did so well he was able to repay the shares in full. The present work recalls the later Twilight of Man, wood engraving, 1926. In both works a foreshortened man is shown on the ground with a starry night in the background (see Burne-Jones 6).
