ROCKWELL, NORMAN. Graphite drawing, study for his "Balancing the Expense Account," with an Autograph Letter Signed, "Norman," to Ken Stuart, art director for the Saturday Evening Post, written in the spaces above and below the image. 3 3/4x3 3/4 inches (image), 11x8 1/2 inches overall; small loss at left margin, marginal tear at bottom (not affecting signature). Np, [circa 1957]

  • Notes: Rockwell forwards the initial drawing of what would become his painting, Balancing the Expense Account, which appeared on the cover of the 30 November 1957 issue of the Saturday Evening post.
". . . Here is my original sketch for the 'Expense Account.' But I agree with you that the Roomette or whatever it is called would be much more suitable. Next time I get a chance I'll glimpse a roomette and send you a revised sketch." At top he adds an additional note: "He should be a 'glad hand Charlie,' well dressed. A real hard hitting salesman character. This day coach is certainly wrong, too grubby. I know I can get a lot of his travelling 'know how'."
