ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953)

CHAMONIX / CHAMPIONNAT DU MONDE DE HOCKEY SUR GLACE. 1930.

39½x25 inches, 100¼x63½ cm. Lucien Serre, Paris.
Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions at edges and in upper image; reds slightly attenuated.

The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix in 1924. Three hundred competitors from 16 countries participated in the six sports that were represented: Bobsleigh, Curling, Figure Skating, Hockey, Skiing and Speed Skating. The decision to hold the games in this Alpine town "triggered a period of frenzied construction as rail and road links and hotel development opened up the area to international tourism" (Olympic Posters p. 33). The skating facilities, pictured here, doubled as the official Olympic Stadium and were the site of the opening and closing ceremonies. Six years after the Olympics, with all the infrastructure in place, Chamonix hosted the Ice Hockey World Championships using the same venue. The tournament was actually held at several different venues, including in Vienna and Berlin; the latter was the location of the finals, which were moved there when warm weather melted the Alpine ice, rendering the rink unskateable. The final match resulted in a 6 - 1 victory for Canada over Germany. One of two versions of this poster, the other more generally promoting "Tous les Sports D'Hiver." This poster is Broders' most action-filled image.
