  • Provenance:
William Schaeffer; to Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2002
  • Notes:
Fenton's extensive coverage and documentation of the Crimean War is the first such use of photography. His more than 350 negatives included pictures of the port of Balaklava, the camps, the terrain of battle, and portraits of officers, soldiers, and support staff of the various allied armies. Already a celebrated photographer, Fenton was commissioned by the Manchester publisher Thomas Agnew & Sons to document the conflict, which saw British, French, Sardinian, and Turkish troops battling Russia's attempt to extend its influence. Fenton's work was supported by the government, who hoped that his photographs would reassure the public.
