ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988)
The Dove.
Photostat print mounted on masonite, 1964. 505x605 mm; 19 7/8x23 3/4 inches. Numbered 6 in the image, lower left. A fine impression of a very scarce, very early work.
We have found only one other known impression in a larger 50x69 1/2 inch format in the collection of the Romare Bearden Foundation, New York.
Provenance: Gift from the artist; New York private collection.
The edition size of these "projections" for the Cordier & Ekstrom exhibition in 1964 was 6. This "projection" is a slightly larger than the collage, which is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gail Gelburd and Thelma Golden, Romare Bearden in Black-and-White, Photomontage Projections, 1964, Whitney Museum of American Art, Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1997, cover and pp. 30-31.
