ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988) Untitled (The Trojan Horse).

ROMARE BEARDEN (1911 - 1988)
Untitled (The Trojan Horse).

Collage of various papers and mixed media, mounted on masonite board, circa 1977. 127x114 mm; 5x4 1/2 inches. Signed in ink, lower right.

Provenance: Richard A. Long, Atlanta; thence by descent to his estate.

This small but powerful collage by Romare Bearden is a wonderful example and a revelation. This scene was not included or developed into his important 1977 Odyssseus series of collages and watercolors, which begins with The Fall of Troy. It adds to our understanding of his conception of the series. Bearden developed 20 monumental works, as large as 36x48 inches, from such small, intimate collages as this.
