ROMARE BEARDEN Storyville Idyll.

ROMARE BEARDEN
Storyville Idyll.

Oil monotype with hand coloring in watercolor, 1984. 778x1060 mm; 29 1/2x41 3/4 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, upper left.

As early as the 1970s Bearden began focusing on scenes from Storyville, the infamous, 19th-century New Orleans bordello district. This work, which depicts a brothel interior scene with a prostitute and a piano player is from a series of monotypes in which Bearden perfected a hybrid process of printing in oil and later heightening by hand with watercolor.
