ROOSEVELT, ELEANOR. Typed Letter Signed, "E.R.," as First Lady, to Assistant Publicity Director of the Democratic National Committee Ed

DEMOCRATS REACHING OUT TO AFRICAN-AMERICANS ROOSEVELT, ELEANOR. Typed Letter Signed, "E.R.," as First Lady, to Assistant Publicity Director of the Democratic National Committee Eddie Roddan, requesting him to supply DNC-related information for publication to a list of African-American newspapers, and, in a postscript, sending the name and address of the contact in New York. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery; horizontal folds. With the original envelope. Washington, 3 April 1936

  • Notes: "Some colored people whom I helped by giving them a letter of introduction to Governor Lehman apparently have a good many contacts with colored newspapers, and they have written that they would like to have any material which the National Committee can give them for insertion in these papers. It seems to be rather a good list of negro papers and I thought you could attend to it for me and keep them constantly supplied."
During the 1930s, the Great Depression was especially devastating to African-Americans. Although African-American voters had traditionally favored Republicans, the attraction of the New Deal policies of the Democratic Roosevelt administration, supported by a successful Democratic appeal to African-American leadership, resulted in a dramatic and enduring shift in preference for the Democratic party among African-Americans.
