ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Typed Letter Signed, as Governor, with holograph "Private" at upper left,

"EDITORIAL WRITERS . . . [ARE LIKE] MEMBERS OF A . . . LYNCHING PARTY" ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Typed Letter Signed, as Governor, with holograph "Private" at upper left, to Harold H. Bennett, explaining why he did not dismiss [NY Sheriff Thomas M.] Farley sooner, and stating that some editorial writers have as little care for justice as members of a lynching party. 1 page, 4to, "Executive Chamber" stationery; horizontal folds. With the original envelope. (TFC) Albany, 25 February 1932

  • Notes: ". . . I think the Farley case is a very excellent example. I could have removed him one month ago to satisfy public clamor, but if I had done so it would have been snap action on my part without taking time to study the whole case--and even more important, it would have condemned a man without giving him a chance to be heard. However, the average editorial writer cares little for justice and almost entirely seeks only action. Many of the editorial writers whom I know would be in their element as members of an old-fashioned southern lynching party: 'Kill the nigger, even if he was not the one that did it.'"
Thomas M. Farley was a New York County sheriff and Tammany Hall's leader of the 14th Assembly District who failed to account for hundreds of thousands of dollars of spending when confronted by a Hofstadter Committee investigation. Although Farley had made a significant contribution to FDR's campaign fund and despite the possibility that his removal might anger Tammany Hall (whose support in the upcoming presidential election FDR depended upon), Governor Roosevelt removed him from office in late February of 1932.
