ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Typed Letter Signed, as Governor, to J.C. Pattishall,

ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Typed Letter Signed, as Governor, to J.C. Pattishall, replying to a request for employment in FDR's future political organization by stating that his own obligations are to his present governorship and that there are no openings at present, and explaining that employment in New York City is not as available as might be suspected. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, written on separate sheets, 'Executive Chamber' stationery; short closed separations at folds repaired verso with cello tape on both pages, faint dampstaining at upper edge of first page, horizontal folds. (TFC) Albany, 29 March 1932

  • Notes: '. . . Just at the present, I am taking the stand that I owe all my time and attention to the state which did me the honor to elect me its Governor. I am, therefore, not concerning myself actively with any plans to further my own political future. . . .
'I do not want to be too discouraging but I must tell you that the situation in New York City is as bad as it is anywhere else, and in many ways worse. So many men, believing that there must always be work in a city of its size, have come here without adequate resources to carry them over, that the ranks of our own unemployed have been greatly increased by these strangers. I, therefore, have the feeling that most New York employers are inclined to take on additional employees from the great mass of unemployed among our own citizens. . . .'
