  • Notes: "I am sending you herewith certain charges and an analysis filed with me containing allegations relating to your conduct as Mayor of The City of New York.
    "The documents I enclose are . . .
    "1. A letter and an analysis filed by Honorable Samuel Seabury.
    "2. Copy of petition filed by Wm. Jay Schieffelin, Chairman and on behalf of the New York Committee of One Thousand.
    "Copy of letter from James E. Finegan . . . .
    "I have only one copy of the eight volumes of testimony sent to me by Judge Seabury. I am requesting him to send you another copy for your convenience.
    "Will you please let me have a reply to these charges."

    On August 11, 1932, Mayor Walker appeared at a hearing arranged by Roosevelt acting as the state's Chief Magistrate to record Walker's response to the corruption charges prepared by Judge Seabury. Walker declared that his over 20 years of political service were blameless; nevertheless, on September 1, 1932, Walker resigned from office and left the country.
    Provenance: Retained by Mayor Walker's legal advisor Reuben Lazarus; thence by descent to the consignor.
