ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Chairman of the Board of the Century of Progress Exhibition Rufus C. Dawes

PLEDGING ANOTHER YEAR OF SUPPORT FOR CHICAGO WORLD'S FAIR ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Chairman of the Board of the Century of Progress Exhibition Rufus C. Dawes, remarking that he enjoyed his visit to the Century of Progress Exhibition, noting that he had received many requests to keep the Exhibition open another year, and promising to recommend that funds be appropriated to maintain the Government exhibits if the Exhibition should be held the following year. 1 1/2 pages, 4to, White House stationery, written on the first and fourth pages of a folded sheet; horizontal fold through signature (without loss), leaf with signature inlaid. (TFC) Washington, 11 October 1933

  • Notes: ". . . I enjoyed the too brief visit to the Century of Progress and the very delightful luncheon with you. . . .
". . . I recall your speaking to me of the widespread demand that the World's Fair be kept open next year. Quite a number of similar requests have come to me.
". . . [S]ince there is every reason to believe that there are many, many thousands who were unable to afford the trip to Chicago this year but hope to be in a better position next summer, I am rather inclined to agree with you that it might be a very fine thing, if the opportunity is still open.
"In the event that you and your Board decide it is advisable to re-open next year, I can assure you that I will recommend to Congress that an appropriation be made sufficient to maintain the Government buildings and exhibits there. . . ."
The World's Fair of 1933, held in Chicago and billed as "The Century of Progress Exhibition," celebrated industrial and scientific development at a time of economic and social distress. Spending from nearly 40 million visitors helped Chicago businesses to endure until more prosperous times.
