ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Autograph Letter Signed, to Mr. Everett, concerning the Secretary of Agriculture "removing barnacles" and committing "grave injustices" but revealing that the Civil Service Commission "has no right of review where the removals are not for political reasons," and closing the letter by congratulating him on his election. 2 pages, folded 8vo sheet; inlaid. Washington, "June 4" no year

  • Notes: "I fear your information is correct. The information I myself have received leads me to believe that in his honest effort to remove 'barnacles' the Sec'y of Agriculture is committing some unfortunate mistakes and doing some grave injustices; but the commission has no right to review where the removals are not for political reasons. Let me say in all sincerity how pleased I was at your election - I took Curtis Guild's view of the duty of Republicans in it."
