ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Ours Must be the Democracy of Service.

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Ours Must be the Democracy of Service. Photomechanical portrait of Roosevelt, 15 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches, tipped to a heavy paper printed mount, 22 x 14 inches, with Roosevelt's signed quotation in manuscript facsimile; minor dampstaining in lower mount. [New York]: Metropolitan Magazine, circa 1917?

  • Notes: This handsome portrait, credited to Pirie MacDonald, is captioned with a quotation by Roosevelt which appears to be otherwise unpublished: "Ours must be the democracy of service; in it no man is entitled to enjoy rights unless he performs the corresponding duties; ands therefore every man in the land should be trained to perform, and held to the performance of, his military duties." This quote would not be out of character for any period of Roosevelt''s career, but we suspect it dates toward the end of his three-year term as editor of the Metropolitan Magazine, as the United States headed toward engagement in the World War. Roosevelt was calling for a draft by 1917. We trace no other example on OCLC or at auction.
