"CHRISTIANITY ALONE IS THE RELIGION OF COMFORT FOR THE WEARY AND HEAVY LADEN" ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Two items: Typescript dated and Signed, with holograph corrections * Typed Letter Signed, to Judson Swift, sending the manuscript. The typescript, a statement of his religious views published in a briefer form as an acknowledgement in Swift's A Manual of Devotion the following year. The letter, making an exception for an exceptional friend and asking, "Is the enclosed alright?" Each 1 page, 4to, the letter on "Metropolitan" stationery; folds, the typescript with minor scattered cockling and two small holes at left edge, the other with remants of hinging at 4 points along left edge recto. Sagamore Hill; New York, 25 May 1917

  • Notes: ". . . Christianity alone is the religion of comfort for the weary and heavy laden and of hope for the errant. We must not get sentimental about ourselves and think that we shall be relieved from all punishment for the wrongs we have done; but, on the other hand, if there is one lesson that Christianity teaches it is that, although each one of us stumbles now and then, yet if only we resolve once more to turn into the straight path, no matter how much we have stumbled in the past, there will be a light to keep our feet from stumbling in the future.
"Christianity has made its own the teachings of the great Prophets that are recorded in the Old Testament; and we can do no better than to try to live up to the words of Micah--to strive to do justice and to love mercy and to talk humbly with our God."
