ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Bernard Goldsmith,

"I WOULD . . . RATHER . . . HUNT BY MYSELF THAN WITH AN EMPEROR" ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Bernard Goldsmith, declining to participate in a hunt with the Emperor of Abyssinia, and agreeing that the U.S. ought to have a minister in Abyssinia. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery, with integral blank; minor scattered soiling, minor scattered smudging to text, horizontal fold. With the original envelope. (SFC) Oyster Bay, 1 August 1908

". . . I don't think I can go to Abyssinia. . . . I am striving my best to avoid going to any European court, and now, if I went to what is really an Oriental court, I should be enmeshed in a perfect mass of details of court etiquette with which I am totally unfamiliar; and I would greatly rather make a hunt by myself than with an Emperor and his associates along. More than that, I wouldn't quite know what presents to bring to him. . . ."
