ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, "T. Roosevelt," as President, to Bureau of Labor Acting Commissioner George Wallace William H

DISAPPROVING REPORTS OF 1905 CHICAGO TEAMSTERS STRIKE ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, "T. Roosevelt," as President, to Bureau of Labor Acting Commissioner George Wallace William Hanger, returning reports on the Chicago strike [not present], expressing disapproval of the bias exhibited in the report, and suggesting that the person responsible be replaced. With a two-line holograph addition. 1 page, 4to, with integral blank, White House stationery; punch hole at upper left, horizontal fold. Washington, 30 May 1905

  • Notes: "I return herewith the reports of your representative on the Chicago strike. I am very unfavorably impressed by them. It seems to me that a man who shows such evident bias can be of no use whatever in a crisis such as this. Can you not have a better man put in his place? I do not think that this particular observer could send us anything that could be of the slightest value."
The holograph addition: "What good is he in the Department?"
Responding to the ongoing efforts of Chicago companies to prevent unionization, some workers at Montgomery Ward began a strike in the fall of 1904; many sympathizing workers at other companies joined the strike, and by April of 1905, the entire membership of the National Tailors' Association had left their jobs in protest. In April, the powerful Chicago United Brotherhood of Teamsters joined the strike. Riots broke out across the city and confrontations became increasingly violent. In early May, union leaders looked to President Roosevelt to investigate and mediate between the unions and business interests. Support for the strike dissipated when some union leaders were shown to have accepted bribes to end the strike.
