  • Notes: Rosa Bonheur is chiefly renowned for her landscape paintings, which wed sensitivity and exactitude in depictions of the natural world. Spending much of her childhood and adolescence in rural environments throughout France, Bonheur was a diligent student of animal anatomy, often painting and drawing from life. Her work reflects both the realist tradition and elements of romanticism. Two works, Ploughing in the Nivernais and The Horse Fair, held in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art respectively, received wide acclaim since their inception, both lending a singular majesty to her livestock subjects.
