  • Notes: Roseland (1866-1950), born in Brooklyn, was one of the best genre painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He never travelled to Europe and became well-known for painting ordinary people in ordinary activities such as post-Civil war African Americans working in the fields or black fortune tellers. Over his career he won many gold medals; his work is now in such collections as The Huntington Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and the Charleston Art Museum.
