Delicious archive of approximately 100 photographs of anthropomorphic fruit and vegetable sculptures, comprising a maquette for a book entitled "Banana Circus," which depicts a family of bananas laying on a bed of nails, weight lifting, and tightrope walking; mock-ups for a book entitled "Tommy Apple," a group of 10 mounted photographs with overlays of a fishy waiter, a carrot elephant, and a grape-haired maestro, hand-colored scenes, loose photographs, drawings, tear sheets, and other ephemeral material. Silver prints, 5x4 to 10x8 inches (12.7x10.2 to 25.4x20.3 cm.) and the reverse, many with hand stamps on verso or initialed, in ink, on recto. 1930s-40s
- Notes: must be seen. Henry Rox was an accomplished sculptor educated in art and art history in Berlin and Paris. He began creating "photosculptures," photographs of fruit and vegetable sculptures, in the early 1930s. He spent a few years in London before emigrating to the United States where he continued his work as a sculptor and taught art at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
