Roy Elmer LaGrone was an Arkansas native who flew in Italy with the 332d Fighter Group as one of the Tuskegee Airmen. After the war, LaGrone attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, graduating in 1949. He lived in New York City and New Jersey and had a long career as an illustrator and graphic designer, retiring as an art director with Rutgers University. Many of his artworks depicted Air Force scenes; Tuskegee's Heroes: Featuring the Aviation Art of Roy LaGrone was published three years after his death. He was posthumously inducted into the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001.

This is only the second oil painting of the artist to come to auction — LaGrone's Tenement Lovers was sold at Swann Galleries on May 7, 2020.
