  • Notes: first edition. Formed in 1660, the Company of Royal Adventurers Trading in Africa had been given sole rights to the African slave trade by the Crown. In 1698 trade was opened to all merchants. After the relaxation of the monopoly, the exportation of slaves increased four-fold, to approximately 20,000 annually.
