HAND-ILLUMINATED BY ALBERTO SANGORSKI (RUBÁIYÁT.) The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. [Translated by Edward Fitzgerald.] Illuminated manuscript by Alberto Sangorski in disciplined calligraphic hand in black ink with verse numbers in red, 26 lines, recto and verso, on vellum. Title-page executed in blue ink with floral border in colors on gold background; first text page illuminated in colors with dense border of grape vines and clusters, incorporating heading in gold and vignette showing sunrise over middle-eastern city; 2 further vignettes in text; verse initials in blue, red, green, and gold. 8vo, contemporary gilt-tooled evergreen morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, recased, rebacked, and with some minor restoration to covers. [London], 1905

  • Notes: beautifully hand-illuminated and calligraphed by alberto sangorski. The colophon page is Inscribed and Signed in pencil: "I certify that this copy differs in many respects from any other copy done by me. Albert Sangorski. Jan 24, 1906." The older brother of the binder Francis Sangorski, Alberto was an accomplished artist. His paintings focused mainly on illustrating classics of English poetry and prose. While publishers Chatto and Windus printed several of his works, most are still only represented by these illuminated manuscripts on vellum.
