Runaway slave collar. Double-link chain, 15 1/2 inches, with iron and brass

identification plaque in center; locking device at either end. Owner's name incised on brass plaque is S. Pixler. Np, circa 1840-60 Collars of this type were placed on slaves who had attempted to escape. This collar, though horrific in its implication, is far more humane by comparison to some which bore protruding devices intended to catch on brush and trees in order to impede the fugitive's flight.
