RUSSELL, ANDREW J. (1830-1902)

Executives of the Union Pacific and well-wishers comemorating the joining of the rails, Promontory Point, Utah. Albumen print, 9x12 1/4 inches (22.9x31.1 cm.), on the original mount. 1869

  • Notes: On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads made history when they joined their rails at Promontory, Utah. This momentous occasion celebrates a connection that created a trans-continental railroad and reduced the travel time from the Missouri River to the Pacific from 6 months to 6 days. The moment the rails were joined with a gold spike, the word "Done" was transmitted via Morse code to telegraph offices around the country where citizens celebrated with parades, bell ringing, and guns firing into the sky.
