  • Notes: album of japanese popular prints of important events in the 1904-05 war between russia and japan, the first full-scale confrontation of the 20th century between a Western power and an industrialized Asian nation. Dramatically depicted in vivid color, the subjects include the Japanese surprise attack on the Russian fleet on Port Arthur that started the war; the occupation of Kinchau, Yingkou, and Mukden; the battles of Liaoyang and Shaho River; and the siege, blockade, and surrender of Port Arthur. Interestingly, considering the humiliating defeat of the Russians, these prints found their way into a Russian collection not long after the war.
