S. M. DIL (LOUIS MALAVIELLE)

L'ECOLE DES BEAUX ARTS BAL. 1934.
46 1/4x29 1/2 inches. Publi-graphique, Paris.
Condition B+: discoloration in image.
Dil was one of the classic Art Deco artists who helped propel French advertising to a high level between the wars. Here he is advertising one of the major events in the yearly Parisian calendar of activities for art students. Combining classical with modern, Dil illustrates Greek temple ruins set off in white against a dark background for maximum effect. Under the ruins is a photomontage of a dancing couple in evening dress, not dissimilar to Bernards image advertising the Salon des Arts Menagers the previous year. (See lot 7.) The text is carefully organized along the vertical axis formed by the columns and this layout gives the image an elegant majesty.
