Acrylic on polypropylene on birch wood construction, 1997. Approximately 890x445x650 mm; 35x17 1/2x2 1/2 inches. Titled and dated in ink on the verso.

Sam Gilliam made a series of acrylic and polypropylene sculptural works on canvas and birchwood constructions in the late 1990s. Rubiyat is also the title of a large, early painting by the artist from 1963. In 1998, the artist showed many of these in Solo Exhibition: Gilliam in 3-D at the Kreeger Museum, Washington, DC. Other larger examples from this year can be found in the collections of Smith College, Northhampton, MA, the University of Michigan Business School and the Department of Veteran Affairs, Philadelphia.
