SANDOR BORTNYIK (1893-1948) EMERGE. Circa 1930.
49x37 1/2 inches. Klosz, Budapest.
Condition B: paper loss and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; restoration in margins; cracks in top margin affecting image; pinholes in corners.
After studying in the Bauhaus where he did paintings and drawings which were strongly influenced by Schlemmer, Bortnyik returned to Hungary where he worked as a graphic designer and teacher in "The Workshop", a school which he opened. This poster is for bicycle tires and inner tubes, which the company hails as "The Soul of the Bicycle". The tire itself is represented in classical style but the airbrush work making up the background and the Cassandre-esque bird show Bortnyik's effort to build a clean, modern poster, that would appeal to the sensibilities of his client.
