- Notes: "In many respects this map gives a new and influential interpretation of the region . . . the river entering at 'Port Royal' is 'Caroline,' a confusion of the Port Royal 'Charlefort' with the French fort 'Caroline' at St. Johns River, which probably had something to do with the idea later in the century and in the eighteenth century that the whole Carolina region was called 'Caroline' by the French before the English occupation . . . this map . . . had a strong influence on the subsequent cartography of the region"--Cumming 53.
