- Notes: In a notorious 1475 blood libel incident in the city of Trent in the South Tyrol, the discovery of a dead Christian child named Simon at Easter led to the accusation of ritual infanticide against the Jewish community, the torture and burning at the stake of some members, and the expulsion of the rest. "The libel had widespread repercussions and served for intense anti-Semitic propaganda both inside and outside Italy" (EJ). The public cult of Simon of Trent was confirmed by the Church in 1588 and ended in 1965. EJ XV, 1374-75.
