SAROYAN, WILLIAM. Small archive of 13 letters Signed, "Bill Saroyan" or "William Saroyan," to editor William Kozlenko, including two Autograph Letters and 11 Typed Letters, concerning the publication of his stories. Together 17 pages, 4to or 8vo, one on "Hotel Golden" stationery, written on rectos of separate sheets; most with even toning overall, some with paperclip stain at upper edge, few with minor edge chipping or short closed tears, folds. Vp, 1937-38

  • Notes: 23 September 1937: "The only thing I have that might interest you is a piece called Death & Syncopation . . . . I''ve never done a one act play. I''ve got an unproduced and very unpopular play called Subway Circus. . . . I am eager to see the piece in print in a place where it would be read by people interested in the theatre. . . ."
29 September 1937: ". . . I''m glad you want to run the piece I sent you . . . . $25. is O.K. with me. . . . . As far as I''m concerned, though, $25. will always be all right with me when the magazine is one like yours. Small, I mean, and not out to make a commercial killing. . . ."
    9 October 1937, ALS: "Yesterday . . . I sent you my 1-act play [My Heart''s in the Highlands] . . . .
"This story hasn''t appeared anywhere, except in Three Times Three, which had a very limited sale. . . . The story is a favorite among critics and readers. I think the play is even better than the story. . . ."
3 February 1938: ". . . What are the other two plays you plan to do with The Man With the Heart in the Highlands? What''s the first bill to be composed of? Maltz''s play is by all odds the best theatre I''ve seen in the magazine, next to mine, or neck and neck with it; though there''s no comparison, the plays having nothing in common, except integrity. . . ."
