Maurer emigrated from Germany to New York when he received an offer to apprentice with Lucian Bernhard. He brought the European tradition of modernist poster design with him and went on to create a lot posters for both the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New Haven Railroad. He is also well known for his ski posters. This is one of two posters on the identical theme that Maurer designed for the Army Conservation Project, the other featuring a soldier in battle, wearing his gas mask on and with his rifle pointed straight ahead.
