SASCHA MAURER. (1897-1961) GREATER POWER. 1938.
41 1/2x27 1/2 inches. Latham Litho, Long Island City.
Condition B+: paper loss in margins; tears in margins, some affecting image and test. Framed.
Maurer emigrated from Germany to New York when he received an offer to apprentice with Lucian Bernhard, which was an excellent way to start in the graphic arts world! As a European artist, and an admirer of Cassandre, he brought a new advertising vision with him when he approached the American railroad companies. In 1938, the New Haven Railway, already a client, asked him to design a poster to celebrate their 50th anniversary and the new powerful locomotives they were introducing. "Maurer's forceful image-his focus on the sheer power and thrill of technology won more praise from advertising professionals than any other railroad design in its era." (Zega p. 115). Zega no. 144.
